is my gearbox about to fall off?
I doubt it but noticed something very odd this weekend.
was under car (2.4 jtdm -57 model) trying to trace a dreaded knock (suspect front wishbones) and had the undertray off.
looking at the joint between the engine block and the flywheel bell housing there are a series of bolts holding the castings together. I could see 2 bolts from underneath looking up and forwards towards the back of the engine. Odd thing was one went from n/s through the housing into the side of the engine block and was fully seated. But another one went from offside through a flange on the engine block and into the bell housing - was fully tight but stood about 10mm proud. Ie it did not appear fully tightened down to clamp the 2 components together. However it was solid, too tight too loosen with a ring spanner! So appears to a bolt that is too long (or worse cross-threaded and seized up)??
Is this normal? Why would a bolt be tight with a 10mm standoff under the bolt shoulder? Should there be such a gap?
