broken down m25 engine/ecu failure
After 95,000 miles of practically trouble free driving my bells gave up on one of the busiest bits of road in the UK. I have a 159 1.9 diesel and recently was getting a error saying glow plugs not available, I got my local (non ar specialist) to have a look. He said the plugs were ok but her couldn't pinpoint the error without spending a lot of time running further tests which may not solve the issue. In any case I decided that the battery needed replacing as I read somewhere in the forums that a weak battery often resulted in the glow plug error message. The car has done a return trip of 1500 miles to and from the alps in the last week. What surprised me was the little cough upon ignition, not what you'd expect from a new battery but I put it down to the cold and my hightened awareness given the still existing glow plug message.
All ok until today, car flying along in outside lane of m25 when I noticed slight coughing/ loss of power in top gear, I kept on drooping gears and speed. Dashboard was going crazy , no hillstart, no adr/pds (traction control), get engine checked messages and craziest of all the fuel gauge was jumping back and forth between half and empty. After struggling to maintain 50mph I decided to pull in on the hardshoulder. When the breakdown guy arrived one and a half hours later he said it was an injector failure according to his diagnostic machine. Later the car failed to start at all, though the internal electrics all worked, but the engine failed to turn over, message said something about protection system not working. After pushing the car into my local garage it then miraculously started but with the same sick sound and dashboard glowing.
Any ideas what might be wrong, ECU failure sounds about right, but what specifically?
Has anyone experienced something similar. I'd appreciate any insight, the indignity of being stranded on the m25 with smug BMW drivers thinking crap Alfa always breaking down is not something i want to experience again.
