yep, something ending in 30d is a constant temptation
I'm feeling very lonely, I'm the only one on here putting a good word in for Mercedes. I really don't understand what you lot have against them, it was never top of my list, but after a test drive, I was smitten. People claim they're dull, probably the same people who dismiss all Alfas as "unreliable", most of whom have never even sat in one, let alone had a proper drive. If you try something like a poverty spec C Class, that may well be true, what a car dealer friend of mine refers to disparagingly as "the bench seat version", but go a bit further up the range, expensive I grant you, and they're anything but dull. In any case, a "cheap" C or E is no more dull than a basic A4, A6 or 3 or 5 series, so make a fair comparison. The 2.2 diesel in my MB is a nice unit, perfectly matched to their 7 speed auto. 204hp as standard, but about 250 after a remap, with no downside at all, I still get an easy 40+ mpg on a run, driven reasonably entertainingly, and with my wife in the front seat, I've seen upper 40s after a whole day cruising along autobahns & autoroutes. It's the first rwd car I've had for a very long time, and I love that as well, plenty of power and a well-sorted chassis with 255 35 18"s on the back bring the fun back I promise you, and I don't believe anyone can get close to Mercedes on build quality. If a new one is to expensive, they depreciate the same as anything else, so there are bargains at a year or two old, mine was a demo with a massive saving on the frighteningly high list price.
