Cleaning the EGR often doesn't really fix the underlying issue, where the solenoid corodes and jams (however clean it is). Best way to test it is with a bit of coke can or something blanking the EGR. Also check for air leaks (as GIR found).
Failing this, the MAF seems to fail around the same time (I honestly believe it causes the EGR to fail).
So try disconnecting that, see if it resolves anything.
The other thing to consider is cleaning the MAP, if the EGR has been stuck open it may have more soot on than normal.
For fuel consumption, double check tyre pressures (the Alfa garage supplied mine at 25psi!), and pinching brakes.
