I'm considering a 159 to aim for this year, once my Uno is gone (it sold a few months ago but is yet to be shipped to Australia). I currently drive my Stilo and my black Spider (yellow Spider sold).
About half of the 2.2L 159 versions on sale in NZ are Selespeeds, which is lucky because I like Selespeeds. I expect the resale value to be less, but that works both ways as it tends to mean the price to buy is a bit less too. These are an expensive car - about four times the value of my Stilo and about the same as my Spider - so I have pretty high expectations. In particular, I wonder if the 2.2 will have the performance of my five-cylinder Stilo - the claimed power output is higher for the 2.2? Does the 159 Selespeed have six gears? And will the fuel consumption be about the same, or lower?
If I go for a diesel (not sure if I'm ready)... they seem to be all the 2.4 version (so, five cylinder
) but auto (
) I have driven one and didn't like the auto, especially for stop-start driving - too slippy and seemed to accentuate the turbo lag. These 159 versions cost quite a bit more than the 2.2 petrol, about 20% more, but what do we actually get as the fuel consumption? EDIT: I have tried to read the massive Sticky thread!
I was surprised to find the claimed economy was near 8L/100km for the 2.4 diesel. That's close to the 8-8.5L/100km that I get in the Stilo. I suppose the 159 is a larger and heavier car, but diesels are supposed to be the holy grail of fuel economy. What about if there was such a thing as a manual-transmission diesel - does that improve performance and economy? I see the 2.4jtdm comes with various power outputs so it might be useful to know which one the auto has, and which one the manual has.
I don't think I do enough annual kilometres for the benefit of a diesel to be apparent anyway, so I guess it comes down to a decision between Selespeed or regular manual - but I'm just a little worried about that 2.2 non-FIAT-based engine I've never known before. The 2.0JTS seemed disappointing compared to the 2.0TS even though the 2.0JTS was better on paper. Did the totally-different 2.2JTS resolve the driveability and reliability problems? Perhaps I need to test-drive one before going any further.
I think I need the outside to be silver or grey (NOT black, the maintenance of my Spider is too much!) but a colour would be nice. There don't seem to be many colours? I might have to risk red (presumably they are just starting to fade on the plastic parts?) The colour of the interior is probably very important too. I'd like the tan colour.
I think the best choice is a 2.2 or perhaps even a 1.9 diesel if they exist in NZ. I intend to keep my V6 Spider which makes a lovely sound and goes really well, so I'm really just looking for acceptable performance in a car that feels a bit more special inside than the oddly-basic Stilo interior. Also I'd like a nice rigid body with that beautiful front end that the 159 has. And finally, I'd like four doors so I can actually use the back seat for stuff.
Thanks for any light you can shed on any of this for me...
