That wretched MAF Sensor ...... again!

Sorry to bring this up again, I know its been covered many times before, but I do find the knowledge on this forum invaluable. So, the story so far. My 1.9 JTDM has behaved brilliantly for the last 4 years until recently when it started to develop all the signs of EGR problems. This resulted in a new EGR being fitted. Those problems went, but replaced with a new, never experienced problem, and it would seem many others have also had these - stuttering especially in 2nd and 3rd with a 'rasping' 'rah' rah' sound in synch with the stuttering. Again, the advice on this forum would point to a MAF sensor problem.

So I cleaned the MAF sensor with the special cleaner. Refitted, no change.
Cleaned again, extra thoroughly (practically soaked the thing), dried thoroughly, refitted. No change. On the test drive home, pulled over, unplugged MAF and it drove faultlessly. Re-connected, problem returns. So it all points to a faulty MAF. But I'm not convinced because as far as I can see there are no moving parts in the MAF which, before the EGR valve change worked normally. After 2 thorough cleans why should it start to malfunction?

So should I plump for a new MAF sensor and if so is it really as simple as taking the old one out and fitting the new one, or does it require ECU re-setting and all that stuff? Or, will it 'cure' itself after a period of driving, in other words, will the brain in the engine learn that there is a new EGR valve (sounds a bit far fetched I know 'cause they came out the factory driving normally).

Thanks for all your musings ............

Don't listen to what I say, listen to what I mean ..............

Try some gentle cleaning of the MAF element - but be gentle with it!

Yeh, sadly not all MAF issues are cleanable. They work on a 'hot wire' principle', so work of the heat loss etc for O2 measurement Etc. when mine when it was telling the ECU it was 50-70c or something.
You could try a scraper for a cheaper MAF if 200 is too much.
Also give the MAP a once over as it works in conjunction with the two

I would hope engineers at some point in the future work out a better way of detecting air flow than a very hot filament that collects debris on it and burns it off into carbon, making it impossible to clean.
