Have 09 tbi, one of the first batches. 50kkm and still good (knock wood)
Were there any early warnings coming?
No real warning with mine. A few times recently it's been giving less than full boost with the throttle wide open, struggling to get above 0.6 bar, but I put that down to a possible reoccurrence of the wiring/boost sensor problem I had last year. A couple of times, the EML light and "Have Engine Checked" message came on but they disappeared again after a stop and restart, and normal performance was restored before I could get it to the dealer so I was putting off going until there was something to see.
When it 'went' on Sunday it was not immediately obvious, with no drama of any kind. I was bowling along the motorway at a steady 70 (ish) mph, backed off for a truck in front to complete his overtake and when I squeezed the throttle pedal there was a slight surge then very little response. My eye went straight to the turbo gauge which was this time sat with the needle on 0, and other than a louder than usual turbo whine, there were no other signs of a problem.
I completed the journey into town with a very light foot to try and minimise the load on the turbo. On the journey back home however, there was a long uphill section on the motorway where it was necessary to push the pedal a bit harder. At about 2200 rpm, the engine developed a slight stutter, accompanied by a puff or two of blue smoke out the exhaust, and it was at this point that the EML came on. By now, I had come to the conclusion that it was perhaps something a bit more serious than the at first suspected split hose,
The only positive thing was an observation that the fuel consumption had improved significantly due to my ultra-gentle driving style. Better than 35mpg around town and 40+ on the open road,
. Maybe I should stay off the boost more often in future,
