159 1.9 JTDm water pump failure and damaged timing built
Recently had to have new water pump and timing belt fitted, done 44k miles. Engine started overheating and then message came up on display saying stop engine. I had some coolant with me so just topped that up to start with and let the engine cool a bit and then set off again. Pretty much straight away though the temperature gauge shot up again and the warning message appeared again. I coasted slowly into a small village and stopped and called the AA. The mechanic removed the cover and straight away you could see the timing belt was frayed and had begun to shed bits and there was a strong smell of burning rubber. He said the water pump had failed and caused damage to the timing belt so towed me home and dropped the car outside my local garage. As the timing belt was still in one piece the AA guy was relatively optimistic that there was no other damage to the engine. My local garage looked at it over the following few days and thankfully once they had fitted a new water pump and timing belt all was well. £383 all in.
