Garage Out Of Ideas - Can Anybody Help?
My 159 SW, 1.9 JTDM has been looked after very well for 4 years by my local Alfa Independent. A few weeks ago I took it to them with the car displaying all the symptoms of EGR valve blockage/failure. Sure enough, after a day of cleaning, scrubbing etc., a new EGR valve was fitted. Within minutes of leaving the workshop I could feel the car was not right. Sure enough, all the 'EGR symptoms' had cleared, but now it was suffering from another problem.
A further visit (and invoice) was carried out a few days ago. This time, they did the following: Code Read System (no fault found). Cleaned MAP sensor and regenerated the DPF. They took the car for a drive and in their words "it appears to be ok, basically, we can't find anything wrong with it, its highly unlikely to be the new EGR valve that is at fault, see how you get on".
I've just completed a 200 mile round trip and its far from being 'ok'. I will do my best to describe the symptoms! If the car is driven 'hard' its fine. But of course, traffic dictates you can't drive it hard all the time. For example, last night I was stuck in the obligatory one lane motorway (cones out after 11 pm!!) cruising at 55-60 mph. At that speed, with absolutely no movement on the throttle, on a flat, the car is 'lurching', a bit like a subtle miss-fire, you can see it on the turbo-boost gauge which is flicking up and down as if fuel is getting cut-off, instantaneously gets put back in, but too much, and the cycle continues. Same with the cruise control in. Another example, gently pulling up an incline in say 3rd there is a definite lurching, or 'hunting' and a very definite 'rasping' noise as if a valve is opening and closing.
Sorry to be so long, but the car has never done this in its 67,000 miles and this has only occurred since the EGR valve was changed. Before I go back for a 3rd visit, does anybody have any idea what it might be, so the garage have an idea of where to look?
