The engine is NOT the same as in a Volvo D5.
The cam belt and water pump change can be done at a specialist for around £350. The quality of components are the same as on any other car. Fiat don't pick poor quality suppliers - and use the same suppliers (and even sometimes the same components) as our German friends?
The official documentation to the dealers is that it is an engine out job. However, the specialists (who have worked on these engines for many years) worked out you can do it without the engine out.
There is nothing wrong with the belts on any of these engines. Mine made 70k no problem. Who said it's 3 years? But you should factor this into the cost of buying any car, it is essential maintenance.
