Crazed Loose clutch cable

A wierd thing happened to me today.
After an approx. 200km drive. I took off from a toll, changed to 2nd gear, then 3rd then clutched and breaked to slow down due to traffic. Then I couldn't change any gears. Clutch felt ok but gear lever only could move back and forward, seemed like 3rd and 4th gear position. Although it was stuck in 3rd gear. After checking under the bonnet, I found a cable out on the top of the gearbox.
It clicked right back into position and everything was back to normal. Now its not loose or anything. Further more, the car only has 12000kms on it, so I doubt its due to vibration. The only thing I can think off, is perhaps it wasn't put in properly in the first place...
Any ideas? This can't be common right?

Rather strange... May you upload any pics of the cable position? Of course, it cannot be regarded as normal, not in a 159, nor in whatever other car, at least nowadays...

I'd get it back to the dealers. This is one of the gear selection cables that has come off.

Ends of gear cables ware out on newer cars, fitted to lots of newer cars now instead of linkages. Unless you really forced it changing gear, the end is probably worn out and will start popping off the ball more often with time.
