Knocking Noise Identified?
I've been having an annoyance whit my 159 these past few months, thing is, it knocks, a LOT!
Sometimes it's very very much notticeable! So after consulting various technicians and some other automotive experts i've come to the conclusion the thing it's not valve or valve shafts or cambelt related! Sticking my ear to the engine running i feel the noise coming from the Alternator area! the power to the wheels hasnt failed and no warning on the dash has come out yet! symply, i step on it and it takes off normally. if there was valve or valve shaf related problems or even in the common-rail/injection section i guess i'd feel some sort of power loss or safe mode constant running!
Whenever i go for a large trip the noise stops for a while to then come back. then it works fine for 3 or 4 days and slowly start to knock again past those 3 or 4 days. example: i went for a 350 mile trip and back on sunday and the noise was noticeable, then from monday to yesterday all was fine, this morning it started knocking again and keeps at it vigourously!
I got this somehow crazy idea: what if the battery is going out? Not doing the recharge cycle completely, lasting only those 4 days max after a good run and then starting to fail and overloading the alternator thus producing the knocking noise, maybe due to some sort of material stress?
It might also be some tensioner on the cambelt circuit, but then again i cant notice any other kind of sympthoms besides the knocking!
I even got to think it was weather related as multijet engines are somewhat sensitive to cold/moist climate, but on some warmer/dry days during summer it also knocked, not so much, but it was there!
Tomorrow i have to go some place to get the battery's cappacities checked properly before i go crazy!
Meanwhile, i'm accepting ideas and other theories, just to relax a bit before igo out whit a sledgehammer and fix it myself!!!
