Since buying my Brera 6 months ago I have had the full works, detailed in the thread title, completed by 2 of the leading tuning "experts" and therefore feel I am in a unique position to offer some consumer advice to my fellow Alfa Enthusiasts.
Now before I start, I would like to point out that I have no allegiances to either companies involved although you may be asking why I find myself in the unique position of having the same work completed twice on the same car at considerable cost, here is my factual and costly story so far.
I 1st had the work done by Angel Tuning at their Banbury workshop and I have had a number of issues, previously well documented in other threads on here. The major issues where that my car was still smoking, MPG was around 29-31 no matter how I drove and the power increase that I thought I had paid for had not lived up to the claims made.
As I was getting nowhere fast with Angel and my MOT was due in December, I decided to have my car ECU checked out independently and found that the mapping on the car at that point was sufficient to give only a 10-15% power increase, the changes made would not have increased MPG and finally the EGR had not been deleted and was actually open! In fact the only thing they had done was to physically remove the DPF core! Other checks where completed including the fuel injectors, glow plugs, EGR, throttle flap and finally a full ECU scan revealed no other issues with the vehicle that could have pointed to the issues listed above.
Once I was satisfied that the car was ok, I decided to ring around a few Alfa tuning companies to see who could complete the work at short notice and decided to pay a visit to Gus at Alfatune in St Helens. After discussing the issues I was having he also checked out the car and completed the same work, i.e. performance remap, EGR delete and blank and replaced the DPF with a straight through pipe, the work I had originally paid for (with the exception of a straight through pipe!)
Once completed I went for a test drive and immediately I could feel the performance difference with the car. The power delivery was much smoother in each gear and you could feel the car had much more power than previously. Also, the smoke issue had ceased altogether, result!
The journey home along the M6 was a joy and I had fun trying out the performance improvements at every opportunity and for the 1st time since I bought the car it felt like I had finally got the car with the performance I always wanted.
Now the final piece of the jigsaw, would I see an MPG increase? After filling up the car I travelled down from Derby to Bristol along A roads and Motorway on Tuesday and then travelled to Coventry and back today. I filled the car up again and did a brim to brim calculation which showed 36MPG, the best I have ever achieved since I have had the car, RESULT!
So what is the moral of this story?
Well I can confirm thay there is a clear difference between the Angel and Alfatune remap/EGR delete/DPF removal in every way and I now wish that I had paid that little bit extra in the first place as I would be £430 better off now!
As I have said before there are many people on here who have used Angel in the past and have been happy with the results. I am not saying that you should not use Angel as I guess you pays your money and you take your choice however, having had experience of both within the last 6 months my overwhelming consumer advice would be to pay that little bit extra to ensure you actually get what you pay for!
