I have now managed to fix the problem. In the end, the P0110 code was brought up by a fautly Air temperature sensor within the MAF (Mass Air Flow / Air Mass - Meter). I even took the MAF out and cleaned with IPA contacts cleaner and that made no difference. So had this replaced with a new MAF and the error has now dissappeared (re-checked after a few drive cycles).
Silly thing is due to lack of proper wiring diagram in e-learn I could not be sure which of the 5 contacts of the connecter on the MAF actually measured intake temperature so could not positively identify if there was an open circuit. A new MAF cost me £157 for a BOSCH part which is rather steep for what it is as price seems to vary hugely for other cars. Its easy to fit as its held by just two steel bands eitherside just before air inlet to the engine manifold (upstream of the air filter). 15 minute job max (if you can cope with the frustration of messing around with a pair of pliers to get the steel bands to clip back in place).
So in summary, if anyone else gets the P0110 code, solution is most likely a new MAF.
