Starting - Exhaust Fumes and Lack of Power
My car: Alfa 159 Sportwagon 2.4 Turbo Diesel - year 2007.
Over the last couple of months I have replaced the battery and all the glow plugs. To be fair, this needed doing as the battery was very low and it turned out I was starting with only two functioning glow plugs!
Still, the problem that these changes were meant to solve hasn't really gone away. The car still sounds very weak when starting in the morning, on occasion it turns off two seconds later unless I give a very small amount of gas immediately on starting. In addition a large amount of smoke is being emitted from the exhaust. This applies to cold starts after a night in the garage or a day standing on the car park at work.
Does anyone have an idea what else could be the problem. It is a process of elimination - battery is new (a brand new one from Varta, powerful but of course not too powerful for the car) and brand new Bosch glow plugs.
What could be next on the cards?
