Well, just home from Autolusso (who I was on the way to when the car broke down), traced rapidly down to the MAF sensor, the price of which was a bit of a shock to us all! Luckily, my approved Alfa Warranty didn't blink at the repair, so all good!
Second time with Autolusso, and they impressed again, so service will be with them!
So seems the swirl/ flutter/ tumble, or what ever the correct term is, were not the issue.
Apparently when the MAF starts going, it registers a higher temperature (less dense air (less oxygen), so puts in much less fuel, hence the loss of power.
Also noted a few other issues (mainly tyres) that need sorting.
