Running in a new engine on 2.4

I have recently had a new engine fitted to my car. Do I need to run the engine in at low revs for while? I was told to not go above 2k until the engine was warm, which I do anyway but do I need to keep full revs down for a few hundred miles? Also do I need to change the oil or have anything tightened up after a certain mileage?

I forgot to ask these questions when I picked up the car but was wondering if old fashioned "running in" of a new engine was still applicable on modern diesels.

Thought please?

Hi Muz

Not over-revving when the engine is cold is probably good advice at the best of times.

I'd increase the 'maximum' revs you get up to slowly over time. Also I'd avoid using the cruise control, as fixed revs for an extended period of time can be worse than a short spike of high revs.

You should let it warm up first yes but when warm dont just drive slowly, diesels hate that and everything gets sooted up quickly and in general.the car will always feel a tad lazy, a good way to run in a engine is to basically drive like those idiots on the freeway we usually want to kill, accelerate then off the throttle then accelerate again then off the throttle again, fluctuate the workload on the engine a lot basically is what im saying
