are all italian 159s soundproofed?

Just spent a week in Italy, Florence to be exact where there are many 159 2.4 jtdms used by the local police and Carabinieiri. Went past many parked up in local piazzas with their engines running and driving around at walking pace across tourist squares yet the noise of the engines were almost non-existent. To the degree that I walked around one to check the model - and yes a 2.4 diesel.

So why does mine sound like a tractor, transit van, bus, or what have you with a what might be a monkey with a bag of spanners under the bonnet??? Are they soundproofed so they can creep up on the local pavement "businessmen" selling bags, watches, jelly bombs and printed paintings?

If they are soundproofed I'd certainly like a bit of it or do they get quieter with increased mileage (I'm on 42k)

I think its just after startup, when the engine is cold the sound more tractor like, after warming up there ok.

Might be due to quality of fuel ? I read on here somewhere that cheaper fuels are noisy. I'm sure someone will be able to add to this

Of course you didn't notice the engine noise with all the noise of an Italian touristic city.
