There are two problems with turbos: Firstly, they get very hot when working hard. To the point that the manifold can be glowing red. In extremem cases (VW and Audi had such problems) the exhaust manifold will crack as a result of either themal shock or the regular expansion and contraction would weaken the metal, causing the manifold to crack. And since the manifold and the turbo are one unit, you could end up replacing the turbo.
Secondly, the heat is transfered to the oil. The oil will burn into carbon around the turbo shaft bearings. This will cause severe damage to the turbo shaft when the cycle is repeated.
I usually drive the last km before hom at a sedate pace, allowing the hot bits to cool off, or I let the car idle for a minute or two. Both ways, I never had turbo problem.
