Weird Noise

I have had this noise emanating from my engine for some time now. The noise can best be described as a tappety rattle. The noise however disappears if i am driving and press the clutch allowing the car to freewheel. Has anyone got any thoughts on what this phantom noise may be? I initially put it down to just being a noisy diesel but after driving another 159 it is definitely noisier.

Clutches can be rattlers when they start to go, especially with that 6 tonne flywheel in, I had mine replaced 6 weeks ago the centre of the friction plate actually started separating from the friction material ... Referred to as ( spinning the centre ) good place to start, depressing the clutch isn't always a spot on diagnosis though, I had something noisy on the aux belt that would only appear under drive and not neutral or freewheeling.

My 1.9 diesel used to have periods of having a tappety noise, usually under load. I was told it was a feature and probably the noise of the injectors.
I got rid of the car without finding if that was the real cause.
