Looks like your manual is a half-arsed change-over edition...!
Your manual has 5W40 B4 for all the Diesels, which was correct.
Later on the 1.9 changed from ACEA B4 5W40 to ACEA C2 5W30.
I haven't downloaded a 2008 manual, but I do have 2007 & 2009.
The May 2007 manual (with ACEA B4 5W40 for all Diesels) has:
"If using non original SAE 5W-40 products, oils with minimum ACEA A3 specifications for petrol engines and ACEA B4 specifications for Diesel engines are admitted; in this event top engine performance is not guaranteed.
Use of products with low-quality properties than ACEA A3 and ACEA B4 could cause damages to the engine that are not covered by the warranty.
For very cold climate conditions, ask to contact Alfa Romeo Authorized Services for the appropriate Selenia product to use."
The April 2009 manual (with ACEA B4 5W40 for the 2.4 and ACEA C2 5W30 for the 1.9 & 2.0) has:
"For diesel engines, in emergency cases where genuine products are not available, lubricants with min. performance ACEA B4 and ACEA C2 are accepted. If this is the case, the best engine performance is not guaranteed. We however recommend replacing the lubricant with those recommended by Alfa Romeo Authorized Services.
Use of products with low-quality properties than ACEA A3 and ACEA B4 could cause damages to the engine that are not covered by the warranty."
