There is no getting away from the fact that the 159/Brera is a relatively heavy car, with a corresponding effect on economy and driving feel. So an Alfasud it isn't. More a long distance GT than a hair-on-fire hot hatch. Regardless of your engine choice it'll be slower than a TTRS, which by all accounts is a bit of a weapon.
By the sound of the stop start driving, I wouldn't recommend a diesel at all. False economy. As a minimum a remap will be essential, otherwise you'll have a clogged DPF and limp mode inside of a month.
If you can't make "her indoors" see sense (I.e a Brera), then I'd go for an E92 BMW 320D coupe as the best 'economical' coupe.
