Mozella thanks for your feedback, it sounds as though the motor flaps are the common things that need replacing. I'm no longer under guarantee so will get them priced up. I just hope it does the trick!
Well, that's the problem. It's difficult to know what part is bad and who knows if more than one thing is wrong. I have some diagnostic software for my car and it can read the top position and report that it's working OK (because at the moment it is
working OK). But I really don't know what (if any) fault codes it will detect. I bought the program after my top was fixed.
The top is VERY complicated and I wouldn't be surprised to learn the only guy who really knows how it works (the German designer?) is dead. Certainly the otherwise-well-qualified Alfa mechanic who worked on my top knew nearly nothing and proved it by getting off on the wrong foot when he guessed that changing the expensive hydraulic pump was a good idea ............................. wrong!
The Spider top is a nightmare of mechanical, hydraulic, and electric components, each one of which is just waiting to fail and ruin your day.
But, all-in-all it's worth it because cruising around on a nice day with the top down, the Spider really makes you feel like a good looking, rich, playboy with a gorgeous lady in the passenger seat even if you happen to be a card carrying member of the Sex Without Partners Club.
Good luck and please report back.
