I was told I needed a Cambelt at 50000miles and was quoted £1200 by Platts in Stoke-on-Trent! I just walked away. I have been told by an indy that I won't need it changing until around 75K.

It's not so much the cambelt you need too worry about. The water pump is the weak part and tends to fail first which will cause big problems. A good Indy/dealer replaces this at the same time when doing the cambelt - it's a must!

£550 in Edinburgh or £600 in Dunfermline for the cam belt inc water pump. Don't know how much with the 90k service tho. The Edi main dealer at Western was £900!!! For the belt change!

did a useless search and posted the same question... wondering if I should spam all the other identical threads now

*Please note these are straight quotes given over the phone in the last 2 days, no haggling etc, I am not trying to be biased in any way or say anything about garages I have not used before:

*SGT in Taplow Maidenhead... get ready... £1,456.38 (dealer but good) The engine has to be dropped? 9.5hr service?
*Thorobred in Staines ... up to £1000 (ex dealer but ok I think, always Expensive) 8hrs?
*SE Autos, Laleham, Staines ... (£528ish) nearest indy who I think is a good man, he will be the cheapest, but I'll have to wait a bit
*Alfa Workshop hertfordshire... £550 TOO FAR
*Autolusso (Luton)... £555 standard/£625 premium - all filters etc
*Veloces, north London ... £650 (inc air con belt) +will throw in air con service if I do it this week only.
the AC is great so should I even consider this? and what is an air con belt?!

The engine doesn't have to be dropped. A good indy will be able to replace the cam belt and water pump without removing the engine. Taking the engine out just gives a load of opportunities to get it wrong putting it back in.
