the most expensive gasket - in the worrrlddd
Whilst I had the car up on ramps and the lower tray off for another job recently I thought I'd check the airfilter in my 2.4 jtdm. It had been about 6 months since a recent change. Anyway I was a little surprised that the filter was quite wet and rusting through the paper element and foam base around the metal inner structure. Not only that but the rust particles were on the engine side of the filter. Anyway this had been after a recent very wet weather 4 hour constant speed journey in real downpours and wet motorways. It appears that the lower sealing ring between the filter cannister and base was not sealed properly - the rubber gasket had been compressed over time to such an extent it was no longer acting as a seal. Even though the filter cannister sits above the tray, infront of the arch, behind the bumper/lower skirt ther is enough spray and mist to get sucked into the air box. There was wet grit/dust/muck all round the external lower joint.
So went to dealer for a new rubber seal - approx 1mm thick by 2mm deep and about 40 cm in length - plain rubber. Guess what - not a spared item! But can be bought with airfilter box for £110 plus VAT!
