"Why is everyone so hung up on leaking injectors and unburnt diesel ? "
I did mention unburn't diesel - but not leaking injectors
It is also what you "hear" not just what you "see" - when the car starts it runs really rough for the initial seconds - not combusting properly - bet if you stand behind it it smells of diesel not engine oil . Just out of interest has glow plug relay been checked ?
imho you would be making an expensive mistake replacing turbo
i wouldn't advocate changing the turbo either yet, much more investigation required first me thinks.
as for glow plugs, it was said that these were changed about 9 months ago, but was this for a reason or general maintenance, and what were they changed for, i.e. brand etc?
i would check them out of the engine personally to make sure the starter circuit is heating each plug thouroughly under your normal key start procedure.
when i've had this sort of poor starting symptom along with the white smoke with other cars, the last one being a 3.0td hilux surf, it was actually a small o'ring leak on the injector pump, which was allowing it to lose pressure overnight, so once you went to first cold start it, and this was in our last winter, it was white smoking and rough for about 15 seconds whilst the pump caught up and eliminated the air gap.
we cheated for a while as the o'ring leak was miniscule and we didn't find it straight away, by priming the fuel filter hand pump until solid, then it would start first heat of the plugs, immediately sweet and no smoke.
could you have a diesel fuel leak back, not neccessarily outwards of the car, that is allowing the pump to de-pressurize for a moment?
we could keep guessing for days!!!
