Life with my Alfa 159 2.4JTDm is gradually getting worse
In the last 2 weeks I've suffered 3 occasions when the engine has absolutely refused to start in the morning - engine turning over but no ignition; try 10 times no difference; wait an hour then it starts fine. No errors on the dash.
Then last week, I started the car and while it was sitting on the drive ticking over it started to sound very rattly just as I pulled away. Driving down the road the car was quite hesitant but to a passenger probably seemed like bad clutch control (my wife jibed "maybe it's the driver"
). I thought I'd try to "blast it through" but as I accelerated hard, suddenly a beep from the dash, coincident with extremely intermittent acceleration, very odd rough noise from the engine. I looked down and a message "Have engine checked" appeared. I managed to limp home. Noisy rough engine. Any attempt to accelerate was met by almost zero response. Got it home. Still rough. Still noisy. Opened up the bonnet and the engine was shaking around like an epileptic with hard knocking sound appearing to come from the front o/s of the engine bay. Switched engine off.
A few hours later I was preparing to be towed to the garage. Tried ignition and the car started completely as normal. Rev'd. Fine. Took it to the garage anyway. They have run diagnostics on it and have said the error is a low fuel pressure fault (I don't know the exact details). They have said there are as many as 8 things that might be responsible for this error from fuel pumps to injectors to a host of interrelated items (I don't recall the list). The garage tell me that changing any of these items is pot luck. That sounds like a pretty limp commitment to sorting this issue out. They want to have the car for some more days to see if they can reproduce any of it again. I'm not sure they'll succeed.
Given the very helpful feedback that I've received in the past from Alfa Forum members, I was wondering if these symptoms rings any bells with anyone? Oh, and by the way, for several years I have also had an intermittently hesitant engine under very light throttle - unsure if potentially related or not but despite the efforts of my garage to locate and resolve it, it's never gone away completely.
Anyone got the foggiest?...
