Air con

My air con isn’t working in my 159, so after some pondering and seeking advice on here I called a local “expert” to come and service/look at it rather than taking it to kwit fit or the such like.

So I called a company called Aircon North West ltd, based in Warrington where I live. Specialists in air con repairs, service etc according to the ad on The bloke turned up and after about an hour of tutting and chin rubbing and telling me endless stories about how he’d fixed the air con on many different cars he finally told me I had a leak. He’d put 6 PSI of nitrogen in the system but over the course of the hour it had dropped to 5.5 PSI. Showed me with his gas detector that the leak was somewhere at the front grill area where the 2 pipes that make their way from the bulk head between the interior and engine bay and round the left of the engine entered the compressor (or some other air con related unit, cannot remember what he called it) He told me that the two pipes entered the (lets call it the compressor) as one pipe in a “Siamese” configuration and held on by a crimp. And that the crimp had “probably failed and was leaking”. He said that he didn’t have any diagrams of the air con system for the 159 but as far as he could tell the one pipe that came out the compressor and then split into 2 to round the engine bay was one log pipe and would need replacing and that might stop it leaking. When I told him I had the e-learn workshop manual he said that that wouldn’t show any air co schematics as air con is a specialist subject and wasn’t to be touched by a run of the mill mechanic.

He showed no interest in jacking the car up, or onto some ramps to investigate his assumptions. Or offering to go away and find out whether the 2 pipes (or is it one) were indeed one long piece that might need replacing and how much that might cost. Or if the crimp that connected the pipes to the compressor was indeed crimped and had faield and that it wasn’t just a worn washer between the compressor and pipe that was causing this leak.

I would not recommend this guy.

So where do people think I should go from here? Does anything this bloke has told me seem reasonable. Does anyone have any experience with having the air con repaired, other than just recharged. Can anyone recommend anyone in the Warrington area.

Was the pipe that looks like this:

This was the same part that went on my previous 159 1.9jtdm.

Where the rubber meets the aluminium the crimp had "failed" causing the coolant to leak when under pressure.
The part was around £70 from the local Alfa dealers around 2.5 years ago, so the price in the add seems right.

Fitting was a pain. The union where the two pipes meet was easy, simple bolt after replacing the rubber seal. The other two were a right mare. Had to take the engine tray off, get right under to connect one to the condensor and the other to the ? (can't remember!).
The whole job took 90 mins, including a regas.

I was lucky and had a trusted local air con specialist that I have used before.

Sounds like the same fault to me. You could fit the pipe yourself, but would need the system draining first, and then recharging after.

Moved over to the dark side

And loving it

Ideally I would have asked the guy to decant it and leave with nitrogrn in it till you replace the pipes and have it re-tested.
