1st is pretty cack in the 159 1.9jtdm, even with a remap. Just feels a bit gutless and "thrashy".
What was it like in 2nd/3rd when you booted it? Should have more of an idea then.
As for gearboxes going bang, there are a few cases on here of them going bump, but not enough case for me to get stressed over.
I am sure there is a torque limiter set for the 1st gear on these, limits the full effect of the torque on the gearbox/clutch and transmission in general.
The cambelt is an absolute must. If no history of one, and the rest of the car is good, haggle the £350 off and get it done straight away, along with the water pump.
They wear their miles pretty well, so if it looks rough, its been treated badly and not looked after. As with all cars service and condition are the key issues.
An EGR is a valve that takes some of the exhaust gases and re-circulates them into the inlet manifold for emissions purposes. A pain in the rear if the car doesn't do some decent mileage to clean them out when hot and under load.
Easy to clean, loads of threads on here. Not an issue rally, just a nuisance. Some have had them "deleted" in the software when remapped, I'm happy to leave mine in and working as I do 20K a year.
If it feels right, get a second opinion, then buy it!
