I had a similar whining whirring noise, quite subtle initially and only heard above 40mph, about 120,000 on the clock. I took it to my usual local independent Alfa specialist who said to bring it back when worse. I did that and they said turbo whine, could pay 900 to fix or could be fine for years. So I left it.

A month later, setting off home via motorway, noticed dodgy gearbox changes especially sticky into and out of first gear and slipping transmission in 6th gear!! Completed 50 mile journey in 4th gear with cruise control set at 50mph. Took it back to garage (difficult as jamming when in reverse gear) who said clutch bearing failure, needs replacing with DMF replacement at same time 1150. Plus gearbox repair/ rebuild sent to specialist in South Leeds - that came to another 950 including replacement 6th gear and half gearbox casing due to damage from loose bearings and/ or cog teeth fragments.

I notice the engine whine / whirr has now gone...

I had a recon gearbox put in mine at a cost of just under 2k and 3 months later driving from east london, whirring noise came from no where even when coasting neutral or driving. took to alfa garage johnsons, and they said its coming from gearbox, they gave me a short report and very helpful bunch. took that along with car to gearbox specialist who put recon in and at first they said they can't hear it, i complained and stood my ground and they fixed it under warranty, 9 months later its doing it again with gear stick knocking back and forth when pressing and letting go of accelerator and coupled with a random rattling noise only happening when 1st starting in the morning or after 7 hrs and also when starting the engine jolts to life, so i'm thinking clutch and DMF.

On a separate note this GM gearbox is a complete sham. the worrying thing is and I can't verify it that the new giulia has a manual 6 speed as a option with its diesels and i would hate to think they are still using it. it has a weak 6th gear bearing and I don't think any of the gears can handle the torque and power from that 1.9 engine. Fiat need a wake up call.
