I had a similar whining whirring noise, quite subtle initially and only heard above 40mph, about 120,000 on the clock. I took it to my usual local independent Alfa specialist who said to bring it back when worse. I did that and they said turbo whine, could pay £900 to fix or could be fine for years. So I left it.
A month later, setting off home via motorway, noticed dodgy gearbox changes especially sticky into and out of first gear and slipping transmission in 6th gear!! Completed 50 mile journey in 4th gear with cruise control set at 50mph. Took it back to garage (difficult as jamming when in reverse gear) who said clutch bearing failure, needs replacing with DMF replacement at same time £1150. Plus gearbox repair/ rebuild sent to specialist in South Leeds - that came to another £950 including replacement 6th gear and half gearbox casing due to damage from loose bearings and/ or cog teeth fragments.
I notice the engine whine / whirr has now gone...
