Hmmm this has always been the case and I thought was common knowledge. I am surprised that the What Car figures are so close to the manufacturers figures.

The manufacturers published fuel consumption figures are measured under controlled laboratory conditions and are standardised across the iindustry so that the public can compare results independent of driving style, atmospheric conditions and terrain. The problem seems to be that this then creates an expectation that these results are repeatable on the road - which is rarely, if ever, the case.
