When the water pump fails it either snaps the cam belt or if you lucky the cam belt slips out of timing. Have not read through the whole thread again but, how many miles, when was the belt last changed and did they do all the tensioners, rollers and water pump. Just another thought do you still have the under tray fitted ? just woundered if its not fitted if something has bounced up an damaged the crank sensor or something. Just a thought.
I have only bought the car recently (a couple of weeks from this date). I have not got the service book, which is frustrating, but I found a receipt showing cam belt change at about 80k miles. It now has 139k. This was at Alfa up north somewhere.
The cam belt has not snapped, I have peered behind the cam cover and it is in tact and fees solid (i.e. not loose), but I can't really get more than a screw driver tip in there to prod it.
The under tray is definitely fitted. And, the P0340 refers to the cam sensor - if the crank sensor was at fault, I would assume a warning would come up about it.
Just to briefly summarise;
I drove the car for a couple of days,
it seemed low power at low revs, idled a bit rough on start up (but that may have been the EGR issue I resolved)
the day it broke down, noticed on motorway it lost a bit of power at low revs while in cruise control
got off the motorway, everything seemed ok
then a mile or two on an A road, the warning light came on saying "insufficient engine oil pressure"
got it home
read this forum
cleaned the EGR (later replaced it)
cleaned the throttle body
disconnected the DPF to relieve pressure (although it was still bolted together, I didn't take it off completely)
attempted to start, and it ran rough, idled poorly, cut out and wouldn't start again
ran FES - identified 4 stored problems (P010F - Air Mass meter incongruence, P0380 - Preheating unit control, P0340 - Phase Sensor, P0403 - EGR Valve)
changed the cam sensor
attempted to start, took a while to start, it ran rough, idled poorly, I brought up revs and it died and wouldn't start again
now when I attempt to start it hesitates and gets stuck
I think that is where we are.
I have bought a new cam belt, water pump, oil filter, fuel filter, glow plugs.
I also need some sympathy here. The car is stuck at my ex-girlfriends place as it was the closest location I could stop. So I really would love to be able to get it running!
