cheers john, i got impatient and went out and did it before i saw your reply. did it pretty much as you've summarised - fairly easy really. same motivation as you - leaking water from inside the door getting onto the sills and into the footwell, both front doors guilty
i'll stick some pics up in one of the 'water ingress' threads for others to use as a how-to. did you remove the metal panel as well, or just seal it up in situ? i removed all the lower bolts holding it in place to loosen up the seal enough to run a bead of waterproof sealant along the bottom and sides. worked it into the join and smoothed off with my finger, then left it to cure a little for about 30 mins, then replaced the bolts and tightened them up which (hopefully) will have formed a nice watertight seal. you can see quite clearly where the original sealant beading has rotted away along the bottom.
