2.4 is the better engine for reliability, power and sound
1.9 is obviously better for economy, but riddled with problems, slower and sounds like a regular diesel
Hang on a chuffing minute, riddled with problems?? Such as?
I've got 94K on the clock and it is running as sweet as any car I have driven.
I'm yet to see a signifiant "fault" on the 1.9 that the 2.4 doesn't have.
Weak links such as injectors, DPF, water pump, cam belts are the same on either engine.
Sweeping statement I feel there smudge!
On my third 1.9jtdm (twice in 159 form, once in GT form) and they are cracking engines. Sound like a tractor on start up, but warm up well. If serviced properly are capable of massive mileage, and with a gentle tweak in the form of a remap can keep up with a 2.4 (in standard form) but are lighter, handle better and are cheaper to run.
Just speaking in relation to my experience.
