the kind of emissions standards that car manufacturers have to meet are far, FAR more stringent than what our cars as private owners have to meet to pass an MOT. remapped cars probably wouldn't be within those tolerances
also, car manufacturers have to be very careful about reliability - warranty claims are expensive and are bad press too. all cars have a tolerance of what they can cope with and, in standard tune, they are well within those tolerances. get a car remapped and - like it or lump it - you'll be taking your car to the outer edges so you're more likely to have probs with gearbox/clutch/driveshafts etc etc as the forces being applied to them are that much higher
but on the plus side, you'll get a boatload more power, a big fat slug more torque and - if you get a professional remap done by a reputable tuner - the power & torque spread over a much wider rev range. if you go the whole hog and have the dpf removed and egr valve fixed shut then you instantly make your car immune to two of the most common faults on modern diesels (not just alfa ones either)
fuel economy rarely suffers either - in fact most people report a slight improvement
