Is the gearbox as weak link?
A couple of weeks ago, had both the clutch and dual mass flywheel changed on my 2.4 after the clutch started to slip in the higher gears. This was a couple of weeks ago. The car has just over 54K miles on it.
But, about 4-5 days after this was done, I noticed a "whine" appearing, rising and falling in pitch as the car accelerated, mainly in the first 3 gears. It isnt there when the car is first started from cold in the morning, but as heat gets into it and warms up, the whine becomes more prominent. Its not massively loud, but definitely "noticable" to the point of you wouldn't NOT hear it. It has a similar sound to the turbo spooling but a much, much lower pitch and sounds like its coming from nearer down in the footwell.
Before the clutch and DMF were changed, the car drove reasonably Ok if I am honest, apart from the clutch slip. But it was shown to me that when the clutch was done, the DMF definitely was shot. The car felt great after the work had been done, making the gearchange and clutch a whole lot lighter and snappier....was a different car. But now, this "whine" has got me worried and I am just hoping that the old, knackered components weren't masking something else more sinister or that this "whine" is something that SHOULD be there, but I never noticed before because everything was so knackered in the first place....
Does anyone have any pointers/ideas? I realise that without hearing this noise, its difficult to tell, but any thoughts are useful to me. I have done a search regarding this and there seems to be nothing of the sort that anyone has had happen to them, so wondering if its just me being paranoid, or that there really IS something wrong and I am just being bloody unlucky.......this car has had nearly £2000 spent on it in about 4 months and I just can't bear the thought of having any more major work doing to it........
Ease a poor mans mind will you? :-)
