Cannot comment on the petrols as I haven't driven either. Have heard that both are greatly improved with a little breathing modification.
As Mozella said, the Spider is more of a boulevard cruiser than a performance car. The standard car is pretty hopeless in the twisties due to its weight and awful scuttle shake. However, I fitted an OMP strut brace to mine for around £100 and it has vastly improved the handling. Chassis feels much more rigid now and the car turns in better, though the outside wheel lifts a touch when going round roundabouts with enthusiasm! The driving position is a bit odd too, with the seat not going as low as you would like.
Nonetheless as a cruiser it is a fine car, comfortable and capable, whilst a few mods seem to be able to wake them up a bit in terms of performance and handling. I have some Eibach springs on my desk ready to fit so will report back once they are on.
Be aware however that it gets a lot of attention, not all of it good. I am constantly being tailgated and people seem to constantly be doing stupid **** when they are driving near me. I think it looks a bit 'flash harry' so many road users can behave quite aggresively towards you. However when kids come up to you and say 'nice car Mr!' it makes you smile!
Niggles that are wrong with mine?
Temperamental boot release on both fob and button in cabin. Sometimes works fine, sometimes I have to keep pressing it for 30 seconds before it works! Not cool when it is raining.
The doors are very heavy and so shut with a real bang which seems to loosen the windows in their frames, giving a rattly sound when you shut them. My missus is tiny and she struggles with how heavy and long they are. Door handles can become sticky. One of my doors was stripped and rebuilt only for the problems to immiedately reoccur.
Electric windows also temperamental - my passenger window doesn't work properly. have tried resetting but still the same. Come on Alfa - STILL with the **** electrics?
If car has aftermarket stereo check that steering wheel controls and Blue and Me work, as these are often disabled when changing the stereo.
Some of the above may just be specific to my car though and not common faults, but some things to check anyway.
Luck is the residue of opportunity and design...
