Who does DRLs well?

Walking the dog tonight I was passed by a lovely white Jag XF. I used to think that this was one of the most beautiful cars on the road but tonight is the first time I have seen one with the DRLs switched on. It looked awful - like a Mondeo with a home made kit made from fairy lights on it. Alfa don't do DRLs any better in my view and the new Merc C Class has awful ones.

So that got me to thinking - does anyone actually do DRLs well? BMW used to have the nice halo lights. Having your sidelights on surely serves the same purpose, and looks a lot simpler and classier to boot.

And is it now legal to be able to drive around chav stylee with your front fogs on all the time?

Just having a Monday moan I think.......

Latest gen Audi's no longer look like (as Clarko puts it) 'like a council house at xmas'. They were the worst offenders initially, but seem to have developed something that is not quite as garish and chavvy as their early incarnations.

They now have this bar of light instead of the twinkly fairy lights.

The latest face lift A5 head lamps are also quite nice and far more subtle.

BMW seem to have the right idea with the 'halo' around the headlight lenses - looks quite neat - shame about the rest of the styling though

Audi ones are crap, the fact you have to dim them to see the indicators work makes them form over function in my book.

My E class has the newer straight ones (not the daft aftermarket looking hockey sticks) which are an improvement, but I really don't want to see the LEDs, just the effect, like 'proper' commercial LED lighting.

Saw the Landrover Freelander the other day with LED DRLs - they seem tou turn off automatically when you put the indicators on - i.e. when you indicate left, it turns off the the lefthand DRL, but not the right and vice versa.

Citron DS3, very nice take on it in my view. Angel eyes still look good. The ones on the A4 I had grew on me. they were below the headlight rather than above (as on the a3) and I think that looked better.

The problem with the jag is they are playing johnny come lately to the led drl party and their attempt at their own style on the XF is a fail.

The problem with the merc style is that the after-market kits you see on chav wagons are very similar so they almost look after market.

+1 for the new generation audi's. The "light bar" technique is very easy to do and sorts the fairy light issue.

I am working on a set of OEM look DRLs for the 159/Brera that use this principle. If I ever get round to finishing it!!

DS3? Noooooo it looks horrendous! Most LED DRLs fall into the same category with me I'm afraid - they have all been overdone by the "stylists" At least the BMW Angel Eyes looked as if they were part of the car and not some tacky afterthought. Fiat 500s also use the main beam reflector so they look ok (although a tad too yellow) and believe it or not the Volvos come out quite well. Audi are gross - and I am not a fan of these signature LED rear lamps either.
Rant over
