Thanks for all the replies, bit new to this game so hopefully you all get this message.
I had my doubts that I would be on my on with this issue! I understood Q4s had a tendancy to do this. Looking at the torsen website I believe our Q4s have an almost identical setup up to Audi S series quattros raher than the "on demand" version of the main stream quattros. It will be interesting see if they experience the same issue - I will try and find out.
Ref the tyre wear (which seems to be a stepping chamfered affair) as I say my freelander did it. Under warranty LandRover had a dealer fix to stop it -again I will see what that was (freelander system was on demand).
I visited my local dealer (Bradleys, Scorrier) and they are doing an hours labour for me to check the following; transmission inc Q4 diffs, suspension, brakes, tyres, and steering etc. I rather they found something now so I can deal with it. They don't do a full laser job on the geometry but if they feel it necessary wit refer me to a specialist locally.
On this subject I believe I am lucky enough to have another 159 "feature" noisey PAS. There is now play and it works very well but is a little noisey when turning the wheel when stationary with a small amount of vibration. They told me they had replaced two racks already this week - gulp - lets hope my dealer insurance warranty pays up if needed.
