I've read through this thread and I'm a little concerned because I think there seems to be a lack of context to some of our thoughts. Firstly tyres are not the only factor in what impacts on the stopping distance of a car, and more importantly, there are others that have a greater impact, for example if a driver is 'alert' (which is what the Highway Code assumes) the stopping distance is about 24% shorter than if the driver is 'not alert' ie not expecting to have to stop (from 60mph). Then there's the reaction time of the driver: these range from between half a second to a whole second to respond to an incident - that's a 12% difference in stopping distances. Then there's this idea of ranking - coming 4th out of 5 is a disaster?? 80% failure rate?? well no, not really:
If we are talking about the 7m difference in stopping from 60mph, that's actually 3.5% of the total stopping distance. Interestingly the Highway code only includes reaction time (calling it thinking time) but does not include what is actually thinking time - ie the thought process of danger registering! So if you are driving along the motorway and the car in front puts on it's brake lights the first thought is not 'I need to stop', I will be looking at what else is going on to decide how much I need to stop and this adds distance to the stopping distance. If a cyclist pulls out of a side road the thought process will involve options which include stopping, if the cyclist then falls over, again the options include stopping, because avoiding an accident is of paramount importantance. (Scarcasm creeps in here: do I wish I had conti's so I can stop shorter in a straight line but possibly run over the cyclist, or the Kumho because their wet cornering is better so I can avoid the danger but continue past or is my decision making so slow that I have already run over the cyclist irrespective of the tyres on my car!).
I think whatever make of tyres we fit, it's more about the care and attention given to the maintenance of the car, our fitness to drive and driving within the limits of both.
