The problem of the specification of the power steering fluid has been discussed many times before on this Forum.
Basically, the green GI/R fluid is the correct one to use in these Alfas. Apart from being synthetic it has better viscosity properties and flows better particularly in colder weather. Essentially, Alfa Romeo used the wrong GI/E fluid from the factory. This is one of the major reasons why so many 159s/Breras have been plagued by steering rack failures.
Also, on the earlier cars, there is a problem with the reservoir filter itself. This has also contributed to steering rack problems. The answer, (as already suggested), is to change over to the GI/R (green) fluid and replace the reservoir unit (with the superceded filter) at the same time.
Just weigh it up for yourself. Would you rather have the correct specification fluid and the uprated reservoir/filter in your 159/Brera for a modest outlay, and have some peace of mind - or leave it and increase the chance of steering rack failure and get hit for a big bill?
And no, Alfa Romeo will not admit liability, and there has been no recall.
