Well, as many of my DIY projects tend to... this has ended in disaster

Anyone doing this project.... DO NOT MOUNT THE CONTROLLERS UNDERNEATH THE LIGHT HOUSING AS ORIGINALLY SUGGESTED...

I finally got chance to change my controller and found that the enclosure was completely soaked.

IMG_0670.JPG
IMG_0671.JPG
IMG_0672.JPG

The connections have corroded and it's falling apart.

Unfortunately my wiring was cut to size to mount in this location so i've decided to remove it all and call it a day.

Expensive mistake.

I don't want to put anyone off as these are fantastic, and if you mount them in the engine bay and use a better waterproof case for them (the supplied one is a bit rubbish) then you will be fine

Jay, i'll be returning the 3 controllers that i now have, 2 of which are working fine, so hopefully i can recoup something from this...?

Oh well.... It was great while it lasted, but i just don't have te time, or probably skill to get it working again.

Mate, that case is rated to IP67 standard and has been mounted under my own headlights for 2+ years. If water got in, is has to have come through the hole you made into the headlight so the headlight must have been leaking from the reseal.

Gutted for you mate!

Hi Jay,

Nope the box itself has leaked straight in. I sealed all the holes drilled in the box and casing completely with a hot glue gun.

The headlight itself is not leaking, just the controller box.

If someone desperately wants to take my lights and reconnect them to new controllers i suppose i could do it, but i'd need their lights first and i'd be looking for money my way too.

So Jay, am i able to get any refund on the controllers i return to you?

I know this has annoyed you a little as it can be heard through your wording however, I have to offer the voice of reason to you before you abandon ship completely:

1) You at least now know why that one controller failed!
2) Unless the other side is the same, I'm guessing the seal was fine on that one.
3) You have the bumper off, and 2 working controllers (1 extra I sent ahead of time in good faith to help out)
4) If you just dried off the case, reconnected the controller etc and ran a bead of silicon in the groove of the lid on a refit would you not be good to go again?

Don't get me wrong, I understand how annoying this is for you, but you have broken the back of the project! If you want out, get completely out and swap your headlights for a new set and sell what you have. I get requests every week for "complete functioning sets" so I know people will likely start a bidding war on ebay over a set ready to go. It sounds like the fix is not that difficult.

Email me as stated and we can sort something out. I may yet have them off you to fix up and sell on myself.

It's a real shame that m8 but don't throw the towel in just yet

For 20 or so you could fit 2 x 6 pole supreseal plugs at the headlight end and then locate the controllers in a more accessible location.

I intend to fix the boxes back to back by bolting the mounting holes together and then positioning them near the bulkhead on the drivers side, they'll be drier there too.

just a thought

Not sure what price point you are thinking of manph, but your into the project for about 400 in parts alone, so That would seem a decent / fair starting point for a resale given they have not exactly been on the car long and bearing in mind the numerous man hours you put into the project!

If I were to build a set specifically for sale, I would start an ebay auction at 450 and see where it went from there given they are a specialist item.

Yep, that sounds reasonable.

If someone wanted the full assembly for 400 I would probably let it go.

Otherwise I'll get them working again when I finally get some time to put into it

It's looking increasingly unlikely that I'll ever get round to sorting this project out - so instead of my controllers gathering dust I'm willing to sell them if anyone wants them, completely untouched.

Open to sensible offers, but I'm in no hurry to sell them, in fact I want to keep them - but could do with the money... Alfa is being all italian...

Don't suppose you want them back Jay

Being of confused mind.... If I was to do this (I am mildly technically minded) do I need a second hand or brand new set of lights to work on. As I get the impression the glue goes like cement on the old lights and will not melt in the oven.

A new set of lights will be better, as the glue hasn't had the time to go 'off'.

It's possible with a second hand set, but much more difficult. A heat gun is what I will probably use, as it directs the heat to the glue, rather than the entire unit.
