I am a big fan of USB stick readers in cars as it is a quick and simple way of carrying music around. My XKR has a beautifully engineered CD changer where you load CDs into the magazine by posting them through the slot like letters until the machine is full... but I much prefer to use the USB socket in the armrest.
Yes, you can put a 1TB drive behind your glove box but you would need to run it from a separate switched power supply as the car's USB socket does not provide enough power to run a full size hard drive.
Depending on what head unit you have installed there could well be a limitation on the number of tracks it recognises, and the indexing is sometimes unit-specific too. Check the unit's handbook.
Generally speaking all your tracks should be MP3 format, so if you are an Apple user you should set your itunes software to rip and record as such.
