hello dan! as far as i know it does not work this way. engine keeps monitoring a lot of variables and when acu calculates that dpf is filled and needs cleaning, it will initiate cleaning routine. it might happen anytime and i don't believe you can initiate it at will. except maybe when regen is close due because ecu coding favors to start regen when variables are most favorable. for example, when keeping constant speed like people usually do on highway.
dpf cleaning is actually simple. multijet engine injects additional fuel rising the temperature of output gasses significantly thus burning all the particles in the filter.
you can recognize dpf regeneration by several factors. higer fuel consumption, distinctive smell of burnt ... charcoal? also, when you stop after or during regen exhaust pipe is really hot.
if your driving style just cannot support dpf regen (like when driving only few miles distances) the car will eventually, after few failed attempts, tell you that dpf is regenerating and you should not turn off the car until it finishes.
hope i was helpful!
