I've had my 58 plate Brera since july 2011. Almost as soon as I'd got it I noticed that when cold starting it would run rough, misfiring, for 3-4 seconds, then run fine. This was always accompanied by a puff of blue smoke from the exhaust. It smelt like unburnt diesel. It would also occasionally stall immediately after starting and need a second press of start button.
Over the course of the last 3 months its had (deep breath): Modified EGR gaskets, EGR valve, new number 1 injector, the other 4 refurbed, a MAP sensor and an inlet manifold.
It's taken 4 visits to the dealer for all of this, all paid for by Alfa.
It was much better after the last visit (injector refurb and manifold) but...to my horror...it stalled on a cold start again with the familiar smell of diesel from the exhaust!
I felt like pulling my hair out, laptop on and lots of searching the forums. Everything I'd read was about EGR issues or injectors, which have all been done. Then I came across some threads about different fuels, owners saying how much smoother theirs run with BP/Shell fuel.
So I ran mine right down and filled up with BP Ultimate Diesel, I didn't dare watch the pump as I was filling up, £97 to brim it!
WOW! What a difference! Purrs along now, starts immediately with no sign of rough running or smoke. And its quieter.
So although there were issues with injectors, EGR etc, I completely underestimated the effect of fuel, I was filling at a Murco station that was always the cheapest around me but I'll now be looking for 'Brand' stations.
Just thought I'd share my experiences and possibly even venture to advise others to maybe consider changing fuel if they have difficult to pin down running issues.
Finally I can fall in love with my Brera
