I don't have kids, but I do have two big dogs. Do what I do. Get a cheap five door beater, grocery getter, daily driver, snow/salt/rain car and park it outside. Don't give it a second thought except for an annual oil change. Don't wash it when it gets dirty, wash it when it is so filthy that it threatens to get YOU dirty. My 2004 Opel Corsa diesel is perfect and it actually still looks pretty good; they must have used very good paint. Washing usually involves hosing it down; no soap, no wiping and no drying. I use a gasoline powered leaf blower twice a year to cope with the interior dog hair. The windshield and windows get cleaned based on how dangerous it gets, not on how bad it looks.
Inside my garage under a dust cover is my Alfa Spider. It's black, very shiny, very clean, and dent free. My dogs are not allowed to even look at it. I'm too old for kids, but if I had any I wouldn't let them look at it either.
