Standard OEM pads as used by Alfa and other manufacturers have tiny bits of metal in them as you are no longer allowed to use Asbestos in pads to dissipate the heat. This is why Discs nowadays last no more than 40 - 50k miles whereas years ago, they could last for years and years. The tiny metal fragments grind away at the surface of the disc with every application of the brakes constantly wearing it down.
So, a handy tip is to fit pads which do not have metal in them thereby reducing drastically the amount of wear as well as brake dust. Personally I would recommend EBC pads for normal use as EBC do not use metal in their pads but there are others available, you just have to check if they contain metal.
Depending upon what you want and what brand and type you fit you may also notice an improvement in braking. I fitted EBC Red Stuff pads and their grooved and vented discs 10k miles ago and the surface of my discs looks almost new, plus there is so much less dust on my alloys and bite was noticably improved. You should be able to fit replacement pads for a similiar price to Alfa OEM replacement ones especially if you do not go to a main dealers.
