My alfa 159 - Problems

Hi guys!

After switching jobs, I received my new company car: alfa 159 ti.

Car looks great although I have some issues with it. Maybe you guys can help me out.
  1. rattling sound
  2. squeeking sound
  3. weird braking behaviour

When I drive > 70km/h I hear a rattling sound from the right front a my car. This is very annoying, it shouldnt happen at all.

The squeeking sound appears when I start the car or shift into lower gears (1-4). It originates from the dashboard somewhere in the middle.

And finally the breaking. When I press the brakes, I can "feel" the road. Is this normal?

I have now driven for a total of 23.000 km. Are these things normal, especially 2 and 3.

I am not happy at all with these issues. I wished I was as smart as my mate and took a BMW3 with the M3 sportpack on it...

Your 1st two issues seem a bit vague.

Last one sounds like you may have warped front discs.

Welcome to AO.

(You wouldn't get such a nice "hello" from bmwowner.com (or whatever) with
a line similar to your last one against the Baader Meinhof Wagen! )

Well the issues are very hard to describe. The ratting sound is probably due to something loose at the right front but I dont know what is is...

The squeeking noise is the hardest describe. I dont really know how to describe it. But it seems to appear i lower gears and when starting the car.

Anyways, I'm taking him to the dealer asap since driving 200km/day with a car like that isn't really how it should be.

It just ****es me off that such a pricy car is already "broken" after 20.000km and I still have to drive 140.000 km with it until I can choose a new one.

1: Place three small pieces of adhesive felt between the plastic mudguard and the body near the sill and the noise is history. Move the plastic mudguard with your hands and you see where you should place the felt.
The plastic mudguard beginnst to swing if you drive faster than 70 and rattles against the body since they first build the 159. Seems that Alfa does not learn :-)

Can you clarify this to me please. I'm not a native English speaker so its kinda jibberish to me

OK

Just take that translation from Jibberish to comic art and after following the instruction do not complain about rattling any more ;-)

First buy felt adhesive pads:

Second discover your front wheel arches and the plastic mudgards inside:

Third place the felt adhesive pads between the plastic mudgard and the body of the car as shown below:

If you look close enough you will see one of the pads in the lower circle.

This will stop the rattling of the plastic mudguard against the angled body sheet as generations of Alfa 159 owners experienced before.

By the way I´m not a native. Just a bloody Kraut who does not care about BMW even if no felt adhesive pads are required to fix them in most cases :-))

The squeaking on mine was not in the dash board where it appeared to be coming from, but in fact from the rear view mirror. Try grabbing it firmly (ooer misus ) and if it stops then hey presto. Good luck

Woohoo thanks for the excellent tutorial!

Went to to the dealer today, service is sheduled for friday.

About the ratting noise, the garage owner told me "never heard of anything like that before". But het told me he would fix it. If he doesn't I will fix it on my own as told in the tutorial .

Yes this is normal, there's quite a bit of vibration that seems to go through the pedal box.
I found it strange to begin with but you soon get used to it (wow, I sound like a dealer! )

It's a company car, any changes made to the car should be done by a professional as stated in the contract.

I had the same trouble as you have.
Jack up the car up and check the undertay, there are some loose parts of the under tray.

@Heinrich - thanks very much for posting those pics. Inspired me to have another go with the felt pads and now my 159 is silent (or at least it has one less annoying rattle

I used to work at Peugeot Ryton plant in Coventry before they shut it down, moved production to Slovakia and flattened the whole plant. I was in central maintenance and had to do jobs on the test track. You would not believe the number of nuts, bolts, reservoir caps, bits of trim etc that had fallen off the cars after they had come out of the factory. Would imagine it's the same for other manufacturers.

159 Ti dashboard Vibration

After a few attempts I finally got to the bottom of my Dashboard Vibration, And it was very easy to fix.
Under the bonnet you will see a rubber strip along the full length of the engine bay, This over time moves or becomes brittle, It needs to be perfectly straight and upright to make a complete seal when the bonnet is shut. I removed the strip and put a few strips of isolating tape onto the metal underneath and to make a tighter fit when seal replaced. Had no vibration since.
It acts as a deadner mainly for the diesel engines to stop engine vibration so if its not 100% you will get dashboard vibration.
