This is only my second post on this website after reading a lot and learning a lot. My previous experience with Alfa's before my recent purchase was being a happy 145 QV owner for 3 years, in which time i had ZERO problems with it. Well, apart from the windscreen wiper arm on the steering column not working which was fixed simply by taking the housing off and reconnecting the sockets correctly. Oh, and the wiper jets not working properly due to a small plastic part that needed replacing on the wiper fluid hose. Oh, and a bulb that only worked occasionally behind the air temperature dial in the cabin - generally came back on after a subtle 'bash' with the back of the hand. Oh, and the seat raising mechanism handle coming off in your hand if pulled to hard in a certain way... You get my drift.
But generally, an excellent experience.
Since those days i have journeyed into the German world of precision with a VW Golf, and a SKoda Fabia vRS - The latter being the car recently sold to make way for the new 159 i recently purchased. I will say it was a sad day. My vRS was a fast and super reliable and economical little sucker. £120 a year road tax, 50+mpg, very nippy, and handled amazingly. It was remapped to around 175bhp so left alot of sports cars in its smoggy diesel fug! But, i decided to return to the Alfa feeling.
I started looking for a GT. I wanted diesel with mileage around 50-60k. I wanted leather. I wanted around 06 plate based on the money i had to spend. I found it pretty difficult to find what i was after and i got the feel for. Someone said to me about looking at the 159's but i wasn't keen as i prefer smaller (non saloon) cars. But, i thought why not and started looking at auctions for either GT's and 159's. A mate of mine is a trader so managed to look at cars at trade cost which opened up the opportunity of getting more for my money. There were a lot of 159's going through - a lot more than GTs! So, after bidding on 3 159's and losing, I came across my now new car. A 2008 2.4 JTDm 159 in Red (
), with 91k miles on the clock. It was a Lex Leasing vehicle with a huge service history, really well looked after (mechanically) and just out of its 3 year warranty. Obviously Lex wanted to get rid due to its mileage and out of warranty. I was pretty happy to bid as it is Lusso spec with black leather. Pretty original i think. I ended up being the proud owner at a cost of £5,350 + sales tax (so around £5500 total).
So, she's done 91k miles in 3 years. She's been sat on the motorway and has road rash like buggary! Bonnet, Grill, wheel arches (which i was surprised about), and some places in between. There is some flaking of the silver coating on the Alfa grill, and paint has started peeling off the bottom sill attached to the front wheel arch. So most of the issue is paintwork related. I now understand the problems other owners have with the Red paint and chips - Hey ho. I will be popping to the Alfa dealer to speak to them about the peeling paint even though it's only 1 month out of warranty as it's pretty rubbish! The chips, i'll have a go myself.
But, i now own a rumbling Alfa again. It cost double the amount of tax than my vRS, it does 10mpg less (currently) than my vRS, it can't hold a radio staton AT ALL!, Blue&Me doesn't seem to work with an iPod, and some other glitches but i'm going to be happy again! How do i feel about owning my first saloon? Well, i'd rather it be an Alfa than any other i suppose. I still look at the GT and think 'I should of held out' but maybe next time
Its an excellent cruiser. I bought it because i do a lot of miles and wanted more comfort and luxury in my journeys which i can say she delivers and i'm really pleased with. A very stable and sturdy ride with no vibrations, knocks, or, wobbles which makes me feel warm and fuzzy
I have her booked in with Angel Tuning next week for remap, DPF removal, and EGR disabled which i'm very looking forward to and i will let you know how it goes with photo's if possible. I hope to keep this thread up to date with the forthcoming trials and tribulations of getting my 159 valeted, polished, paint chip paintwork done, remapped and mods, and paintwork discussion with the dealer!
I do have a couple of questions for people though - Does anyone else have any problems with the stock radio as mine will not hold a radio station!! I live in the sticks and cannot get anything until i get near a city! Will changing the head unit help??
happy driving folks!
