Noise caused by dirt from road, or a coincidence?

Drove over a road with a raised grass/gravel/dirt middle (farmers track). Very bumpy road.
Wasnt long, and after several scrapeings of my engine cover (which isnt 100% tight), I heard a whine noise appear.

Worse on idle. As soon as i engage a gear, it dissapears, but is present when turning the steering wheel

Have a listen to the sounds here...

What do you think? Some stone or dirt rubbing against a component? Or something to do with the steering? Certainly feels rough turning left or right...
